What Happens During a Root Canal Appointment?

December 9, 2024 9:00 am

Let’s be honest—the words “root canal” spark a mix of anxiety and curiosity. But, modern root canal treatment is nothing to fear. In fact, it’s a straightforward procedure designed to save your natural tooth and relieve pain caused by infection or damage. Understanding what happens during a root canal appointment can help you feel more comfortable and confident about the process.

    Step 1: Diagnosing the Problem

The process begins with a detailed examination. Dr. Paguio will evaluate your tooth using X-rays and other diagnostic tools to locate infection or damage in the pulp (the soft tissue inside your tooth). Once the diagnosis is confirmed, he’ll explain the treatment plan and address any questions or concerns you have.

    Step 2: Numbing the Area

Before the procedure starts, the area around your tooth will be numbed with a local anesthetic, ensuring you won’t feel pain—only mild pressure. If you feel nervous, let us know. We’re happy to explore additional ways to help you feel relaxed.

Step 3: Cleaning and Shaping the Canals

After you’re comfortable, Dr. Paguio will create a small opening in your tooth to access the damaged pulp. Using specialized tools, the infected tissue is carefully removed, and the canals are cleaned and shaped. This step is crucial for eliminating bacteria and preparing the space for a filling. In cases where the tooth is severely weakened, your endodontist may place a small post inside the canal to provide additional support for the final restoration.

Step 4: Filling and Sealing the Tooth

Once the canals are clean, they’re filled with gutta-percha, a biocompatible rubber-like material that seals the tooth and prevents future infections. A temporary filling is then placed to close the opening. You’ll return to your general dentist to have a permanent crown or restoration added for added protection and function.

    Step 5: Post-Treatment Recovery

It’s normal to feel mild soreness for a day or two after your root canal. However, this can be easily managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. Once complete, your tooth will be on the path to full recovery, restored and pain-free.
